The iconic 80s children's footballing drama. We're called Jossy's Giants. Football's just a branch of science. Jossy Blair (Jim Barclay) was a talented footballer in his youth but his career was cut short after he injured himself during his first game for Newcastle United. One day Jossy sees the local youth football club, the Glipton Grasshoppers, struggle in a match, and offers the boys some much-needed advice on improving their game. After hearing about Jossy's past and reputation, the Grasshoppers, along with their friend and number one fan Tracey (Julie Foy), decide they need his expertise, and convince Jossy to become their new manager. Jossy takes on the seemingly mammoth task of training the cheeky and boisterous boys in the team. But with some organisation, a change of attitude, and a lot of humour along the way, he transforms them into a respectable team, the Glipton Giants. First shown on BBC One in 1986, Jossy's Giants has since become an iconic TV series fondly remembered by a generation of football mad children who grew up in the eighties. Directed by Edward Pugh (Grange Hill, Byker Grove), and written by TV personality and darts commentator Sid Waddell. Featuring guest star appearances from footballers Bobby Charlton and then-England captain Bryan Robson.

More than just nostalgia
I loved this as a kid, and bought this as a trip down memory lane to share with my kids. It's still pretty funny today, and the cast/characters are really likeable. What really surprised me was how dark it was in places - not too dark for kids, mind, just dark enough to reflect on how life (and the people in it) isn't perfect.

Jossy's Giants
Not interested in football? Me neither, but I love this. Jossy's Giants is as much about friendship, effort, achievement and bridging those troublesome teenage years as it is about football. Despite my lack of interest in the game I found myself rooting for the lads during their matches. Made in the mid-80's it does of course have huge nostalgia value, too. I read another review elsewhere that described Jossy's Giants as 'non-ironic' nostalgia, which grated a bit; since when did we have to justify nostalgia as being non-ironic? Jossy's Giants is wonderful viewing, funny and engaging, a snapshot of childhood in a previous decade. Lots of great characters and plenty of humour that can still make this jaded fortysomething smile.
