Not bad for the enthusiast
This book is good in the sense of containing a lot of pages and plenty of reproduced factory brochures as well. The format consists of the authors covering the history of Villiers itself, and working through with potted histories of the various motorcycle manufacturers who fitted Villiers engines. This latter material is fairly superficial with the sheer numbers of such manufacturers bulking out the book but making for dreary reading. Minicar and Go-Kart manufacturers are also covered, but for whatever reason not the numerous scooter makers who fitted Villiers; they get barely a mention. Quite a few spelling, grammar and syntax mistakes, particularly towards the end. I get the impression that the book has been thrown together a bit hurriedly.

Book OK ... but not all pages printed properly
The book itself is interesting and informative - my concern is with the printing of the book as pages 69-72 have not printed properly and are unreadable. I look forward to Amazon's response.

Not much substance
The book is well written (but proofreading could be better) and it contains an immense amount of detail about the Villiers engines - but there is a lack of substance. What were the engines really like? The factory concentrated on reliability instead of power but did they succeed? And the mileages achieved were impressive but what about longevity, especially compared with present day engines? These questions remain unanswered...

Best reference for Villiers history and engines
If you need reference for any Villiers engine, even industrial ones, this is a great book for that. It's a great history, and covers from the origins of the company, to it's last days. Every model is there, and includes aftermarket modifications made to the Villiers engines to make them preform better. That includes the special heads and barrels, and also special engine cases, including Alpha. It covers carting, motorcycle, and industrial engines. Super reference. Highly recommend it for any motorcycle historian and great for restorers of those engines.
