Ultimate Comics Thor

I could get to like these Ultimates!
I've only started reading Marvel comics in the past year. So, I've stuck with newer releases that are supposed to be newbie-friendly, like Journey into Mystery and The Mighty Thor. But, once I started, I was hooked. I particularly like the Thor comics, mainly because I love Loki. He's my favorite villain of myth, and now comics. While browsing, Ultimate Thor popped up as a recommendation. I was hesitant at first because it appeared to be another reimaging of his origin. And it is. But, it is also a jumping off point for a new take on the hero. The book switches between three time lines: The Present, 1939 and Asgard of various eons or ages ago. In the present, Thor appears to be in a sanitarium. They have been experimenting with something designed specifically for him but now suspect he may be crazy because he thinks he's the reincarnated Thor! In 1939, we follow the masked Zemo as he finds the Norn stones and prepares to invade Asgard with the help of a Nazi and Frost Giant army. And, eons ago we see the three sons of Odin fighting an endless war against Jotunheim; but, it will soon end and change everything.First, I love that in this world, Loki is actually Odin's son and not adopted. It presents so many opportunities to not only reimagine the tale, but to provide explanation for his and others' actions. I mean, why would Odin put up with him for so long when he favored his real sons anyway? Here, he is a real son and it makes sense why Odin wouldn't give up on his child. It also provides a possible motive for Loki's treachery - a spurned mother. Zeno's army presumably achieves Ragnarok, causing the reincarnation of Thor and Balder - as men. But, we cannot have Thor without his lightning, and the remedy for that is clever and full of possibilities.Overall, I loved this Ultimate Thor, but am left unsure how to proceed. I want more of the story but since the various character often intertwine, I do not know what book to go to next...

Really Good! Just Not Long Enough.
I am a fan of the Ultimate Marvel Universe and its incarnation of Thor. I am a fan of Thor in the 616 Universe as well. I'm just a fan of Thor. Period. This origin story of the Ultimate Thor character is clever and throughly enjoyable. The dialogue is never stale and the artwork by Pacheco is, as always, excellent. Only probelm is...IT'S TOO SHORT! I wanted more. Nay, I craved more! But unfortunately, my hunger was not sated. For some reason, Marvel decided this story was as long as it needed to be. I disagree. It deserved at least another issue's worth of pages. If it weren't so short, I'd give it 5 stars. As it stands, the plot is great, the characters are great, the writing is great, and the art is great. BUT, the length of the story is just not worthy of the Thundergod's Ultimate Universe origin. I love the book. I would recommend the book to any Thor fan. I just can't in good conscience give it the full 5 stars due to its length, or lack thereof. I will give it 4 1/2 though!

Ultimate Ragnarok #1
A story that jumps throughout time following present day Thor on Earth (pre-Ultimates), World War 2 era Thor and Thor in ancient times. The far past features Thor's relationship with his brothers (Balder and Loki). WW2 era is a Ragnarok story with classic villains the Frost Giants & Nazis. These events lead to current day Thor's appearance in Ultimates. The Norn Stones connect all the events.

Good read
Entertaining. Gives the origin of the Ultimate Thor. Ties in a World War 2 theme. Answers the question of Thors mental stability/identity as shown in previous comics.

A perfect jumping on point
I had never read a Thor comic before, so I turned to the Ultimate Comics Universe. It was a perfect jumping on point. If you're a fan of the movie, this is great. Loki, Odin, Thor, the Frost Giants are all here. If you're interested in becoming a reader of Thor, pick this up.

Thor origin
The book shows the past of Thor, Loki and Balder how they trained and how Loki betrayed them and how he was part of Hydra as well. It also looks as how Thor got his gear and wondered if he was delusional.

A fun book
If you don't know what you're getting into, Ultimate Thor is prequel to Mark Millar's Ultimates 1 & 2, which you should read first if you want to understand what's going on at the end.Ultimate Thor jumps between world war two, ancient asgard and europe in the run-up the the finale of Ultimates 1, volume 1. The Asgard of the ultimate comics universe is very different to the asgard in the movies and other comics. Its a fantasy dimension rather than a soft scifi alien planet. If you've just watched The Avengers and you want more of that, then this isn't the book for you. Instead, read The Ultimates. I cannot recommend it highly enough. This book gives Thor quite a bit more background, but I think it raises as many questions as it asks. It's not really about filling in the gaps in the Ultimates: It's about the fall of Loki and how a masked nazi general called Baron Zemo set out to cause ragnarok. If that sounds awesome to you, you'll like this.If I have one criticism it's that it just doesn't feel like it's on the right scale. It rushes through what could have been epic battles, presents a miniature ragnarok and altogether feels like it wanted to be twice as long. That said, it's not expensive and what there is is very enjoyable.

Simple but great storyline and artwork
The plot is simple, and set out intricately enough to keep me engaged from page to page. The artwork is also very good. It captures the typical Thor story with a modern twist toward the end.The book, however, is quite short. Enjoyable nonetheless.
