## **The OBDLink EX Review: The Gold Standard for Serious Ford, Lincoln, and Mazda Diagnostics** For the avid DIYer, the weekend mechanic, or even the aspiring professional working on Ford, Lincoln, or Mazda vehicles, standard OBD2 scanners often feel like reading only the summary of a complex novel. They give you the basic plot—the check engine light codes—but miss all the rich, detailed chapters beneath. The OBDLink EX, specifically designed for use with the powerful FORScan software, is the tool that hands you the entire book. It is not just an adapter; it's a master key that unlocks the full diagnostic and programming potential of your vehicle. **First Impressions: Built with Purpose** From the moment you unbox the OBDLink EX, it’s clear this is a tool, not a toy. The housing is a robust, high-quality plastic that feels durable enough for a professional shop environment. The 2.5-foot cable is a thoughtful length, providing enough slack to comfortably place a laptop on the passenger seat without straining the connection to the OBD2 port. The bright blue status LED is clear and easy to see. But the true quality of the OBDLink EX isn't in its physical form—it's in the silicon and firmware within. **Performance: Where the Magic Happens** The OBDLink EX’s raison d'être is to provide flawless, high-speed access to a vehicle's multiple CAN buses. Unlike generic ELM327 clones that frequently struggle, freeze, or fail to connect to critical modules, the OBDLink EX performs with unwavering stability. * **Flawless HS-CAN/MS-CAN Switching:** This is its killer feature. Many Ford/Lincoln/Mazda vehicles use a High-Speed (HS) CAN bus for powertrain modules and a Medium-Speed (MS) CAN bus for body control modules (like windows, locks, and lighting). Cheap adapters often cannot automatically switch between these networks, leaving you blind to half of your car's computer systems. The OBDLink EX handles this switching seamlessly and automatically, granting you complete access to every module FORScan can see. * **Blazing Fast Data Transfer:** When you're running a network scan of all modules or logging live data, speed matters. The EX, being a wired USB device, offers a faster and more reliable data stream than its Bluetooth counterparts. This means module configuration changes happen quicker, and data logs are more consistent, without the latency or dropout risks of a wireless connection. * **Unmatched Stability:** During critical procedures like programming a new key fob, configuring a new module, or updating the central configuration (As-Built data), a dropped connection can range from frustrating to catastrophic. The rock-solid reliability of the OBDLink EX provides the confidence to perform these advanced tasks without holding your breath. **Real-World Applications: From Diagnostics to Deep Customization** This adapter, paired with FORScan (a free, donation-supported software), transforms your laptop into a professional-grade diagnostic computer. Here’s what you can actually *do*: 1. **Advanced Diagnostics:** Read codes from *every* module, not just the engine. Is your climate control acting up? Read the HVAC module. Power liftgate malfunctioning? Interrogate the liftgate module. This pinpoints problems that would otherwise require expensive dealer trips. 2. **Live Data Streaming:** Monitor a breathtaking array of real-time parameters from any module. Watch individual wheel speeds, fuel trims, sensor voltages, and body control signals to diagnose intermittent issues that never set a hard code. 3. **Module Programming (The True Power):** This is where the EX pays for itself many times over. * **Enable Hidden Features:** Enable features like Bambi Mode (high beams and fogs stay on together), global window open/close, disable the double-honk when exiting the running vehicle, and much more. * **Configure New Parts:** Program a new battery, a new tire pressure sensor, or even a new instrument cluster to your vehicle's VIN. * **As-Built Data Management:** Restore a module's configuration or customize it to your specific preferences. **The FORScan Ecosystem: A Necessary Partner** It is impossible to review the OBDLink EX without mentioning FORScan. The adapter is the hardware key, and FORScan is the software that turns it. The OBDLink EX is the officially recommended USB adapter for a reason: its compatibility is guaranteed. You will not waste hours troubleshooting connection issues that are common with cheap, counterfeit ELM327 devices. **Who Is This For?** This is not a tool for someone who just wants to read a basic check engine light. For that, a $20 Bluetooth dongle and a phone app are sufficient. The OBDLink EX is for: * **The serious Ford/Mazda DIYer** who wants to perform dealer-level diagnostics and coding. * **The hobbyist mechanic** who enjoys customizing their vehicle's features. * **The technical enthusiast** who wants to understand and maintain their vehicle at a deep level. **The Verdict: An Unqualified Recommendation** The OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter is a premium product that delivers flawless professional performance at a consumer-friendly price. It is the most reliable, stable, and capable gateway to the advanced world of Ford, Lincoln, and Mazda diagnostics and programming. While the initial cost is higher than a generic adapter, the time saved troubleshooting connection issues, the confidence gained from its rock-solid stability, and the sheer depth of vehicle access it provides make it an invaluable investment. If you are serious about working on your Ford, Lincoln, or Mazda vehicle, the OBDLink EX is not just the best choice—it is the only choice. It is, without exaggeration, the gold standard in its category.

I wanted a wired adapter so I purchased this one based on the recommendation of the FORscan website. I'm so glad I did. Flawless performance. Drivers installed automatically. Connected to vehicle and got the green light as soon as I powered up the laptop. Initialized the FORscan program and the rest was a piece of cake. Very fast data transfer. No HS/MS-CAN switches to flip. Vehicle recognized and all modules showed up. Great feeling when no DTC codes appeared. Did one mod on my 2019 F-150 truck that has been bugging me for years. As far as I'm concerned, that one alone was worth the price of the adapter. I have a few more mods to try. Eager to explore some other features of the FORscan program.

There are a lot of online videos of the FORScan App. If you own a 1996 or newer Ford, Lincoln, Mercury or most Mazdas, this is the best tool in the box. When the repair shop is charging over $200/hour labor, this pays for itself in one application and diagnoses. This scanner works with my Dell laptop and provides way more information when paired with the FORScan App. Not only does it read and modify codes but reports on things that do not trip your Check Engine Light. My 1998 Lincoln Town Car was experiencing a slight misfire that I could feel but it never gave a Warning light. By going into Mode 6 of the App, it identified which cylinder was the problem. It also allows you to change the factory settings, reprogram remotes, and monitor everything from brakes to your A/C compressor. This scanner when paired to the App gives you as much information as the scanner your dealer uses for a whole lot less time, and money. Best buy I have made this year!

I am a professional automotive technician with 24 years of experience. I specialize in diagnostics. This item works great! I purchased this to use with my Android car stereo to have additional gauges using ForScan. It works well for that. I have never had an issue with battery drain over 4 years of use. The vehicle it's installed in gets used infrequently too, so the battery saver feature definitely works. I love having real time live data on the dash, from all modules. The first unit I ordered never arrived. Amazon took care of that. The one that did arrive worked great. I installed it under my dash with an OBD2 splitter cable, then plugged the USB into the stereo. For the last several months, connection has been spotty. If eventually stopped connecting altogether. I finally pulled it out today to see if this interface or the stereo were the culprit. The power light stays off on the OBDLink, even after disconnecting and reconnecting it. Sadly ot has died, just outside of the generous 3 year warranty. 4 stars for the death right outside of warranty. However, I'm here buying another. 9/15/25 Update This item has been revised since my 2021 purchase. It still works well. The powersaving feature when not in use still works as well. There is 1 caveat to my particular setup though. (ATOTO A6 performance running ForScan.) The first OBDLink wouldpower up and work fine from a sleep state. Occasionally, it would take a couple tries, but would work. This revision makes me disconnect both ends of the device, then reconnect it. Otherwise I can not get it to work and the LED is red. This is not convenient for a setup installed under the dash on a splitter cable. My workaround was to rewire the leg of the splitter cable to have IGN+ on pin 16, rather than B+. Benefits with this setup are that there is no doubt that your battery will not be drained by this unit. It also seems to connect to ForScan more reliably on startup. By using the splitter cable, the OBD port for diagnostic tools to connect to is unaffected by this change. Downside is that this adds an additional later of difficulty to an install like mine. Overall, if you're using this device in a setup like this, then this modification is probably trivial to you. I still recommend the device, and will likely put one in any OBD2 equipped Ford I own.

I had previously used a blutooth capable scanner, to interface the OBDII plug on my FOrd F350 with the FORScan app on my laptop. Connecting was always finicky and it wasn't real stable. This wired scanner is FAR SUPERIOR. Connecting the laptop to the truck was a breeze, and it provided communications back and forth at a significantly higher speed with PERFECT stability. Sometines the fancy new stuff (bluetooth) is a poor substitute for proven reliability and the simplicity provided by this item. It arrived quickly and eliminated hours of frustration I typically experienced with the bluetooth scanner. I LOVE THIS THING!!!

Bought this for a 2020 F150 XLT FX4. Works perfect and connects quickly. If you plan on using FORScan, I highly recommend this! I’ve used other brands in the past, and I love that this item has the auto switch!

Werkt zoals op gegeven 👍

The OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter is hands down one of the best investments I’ve made for my vehicle. I bought it specifically to work with FORScan on my Ford, and it performs flawlessly. Setup was quick and easy — just plug it in, connect to your laptop, and you’re good to go. It gives you full access to all the modules, not just basic diagnostics like many cheap OBD tools. I was able to run advanced diagnostics, program keys, reset modules, and even enable hidden features on my truck. Super powerful for the price! The build quality is excellent and the wired connection ensures fast, stable communication without any dropouts. If you're a DIYer or just want to save money on dealer visits, this tool is a no-brainer. Highly recommend for any Ford/Lincoln/Mazda owner using ForSCAN

Just what I needed!
