Knitting Without Needles: A Stylish Introduction to Finger and Arm Knitting

Beautiful but suggestions for affordable yarn alternatives would help
I've just received this book and it's gorgeous! I'm a huge fan of online tutorials but these patterns definitely cannot all be found for free online- the book is well worth it! I've recently gotten into arm knitting for home decor items so I skipped past the wearables for the time being. I do agree with one reviewer that it would be more useful to have the "how to" at the beginning, but it's easy enough to flip to it first for an overview, I suppose.I deducted a star for the extremely expensive nature of the projects as laid-out by the author. I understand that she can't control the cost of wool or jumbo yarns, HOWEVER, I really would have loved to see some alternative yarns listed. The pouf, for example, calls for two skeins of yarn that costs $125/skein. I think it's safe to say that not many readers can afford that! All of the yarns listed are merino, alpaca, etc... incredibly expensive and the sticker shock is painful, to say the least, when you go try to find the yarns for sale.An index at the end listing both wool options (expensive!) and synthetic or blend yarns of the different weights called for would be wonderful. I saw in the back that Purl Soho donated all of the yarn used for the projects. For anyone not familiar with their (admittedly beautiful) blog and shop, it is not a place to bargain hunt for fibers. That said, their fiber selections are exquisite quality, so if you want to make a one-of-a-kind, heirloom piece, then use the recommended yarns.Anyway...All that said, be resourceful folks! Not just in finding alternatives, but in finding deals online. I just bought ten skeins of Lion Brand WOW yarn for a rug I want to make for $9 each (regular retail is $21!) and got free shipping. If you really love merino roving, scour Etsy and be willing to take a chance on a newer shop. Many times they'll sell their jumbo roving for less to get some early sales and reviews. I just ordered 5 lbs of gorgeous merino roving yarn from a new shop for less than $100 shipped to my door. You really need to look for the deals. And, of course, there are the big brand ones we've all seen used in online tutorials like premier couture jazz and pattons cobbles. Collect those coupons and shop around! If you haven't already, bookmark the Yarnsub website! Then go there to find pretty much every brand and type of yarn ever created and alternatives, not just listed, but compared on texture, weight, fiber content, warmth, drape, etc.Moral of the story: I think it's a shame that the author didn't make the projects more accessible by acknowledging that not all readers are either in the US or wealthy. But with a little bit of resourcefulness, we thriftier makers can figure out substitutions and make our own gorgeous versions of the projects in the book!

with an abundance of lovely and happy photos, tons of great explanations and information
The thing that struck me initially about this book is the big-heartedness with which it was written. It's a generous size, with an abundance of lovely and happy photos, tons of great explanations and information, and a terrific variety of projects. Obviously so much love went into the making of it. As an inveterate knitter with needles, I'm excited for the liberation of using just my arms and fingers and have in mind several kids who will love and benefit from learning how to do this, especially as they are intimidated by needles at this point in their lives. It looks like the thoroughness of the book will provide me with any answers I may need as well as encouragement and support. Can't wait to make the rope rug. And linen baskets. And cabled throw. And booties and crowns . . . May I please just drop everything else I have to do?

Best needle free knitting book
I'm of two minds about this book. In the back are some great tips and techniques. Included are fundamentals such as how to prevent tangling when knitting with multiple balls of yarn. Wish I'd seen that before I spent six weeks untangling 4 balls of yarn. However I was a little disappointed in the limited number of patterns and the variety.Overall there are great suggestions, good advice, and some good patterns. Well written and easy to understand

The instructions were clear and easy to follow
I am a new to knitting and tend to get frustrated with my knitting projects. However, I couldn't resist the gorgeously made and photographed pieces in this book! I ended up making the faux lambskin rug for my son's nursery and the process was fairly quick (yay for arm knitting!) and painless. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. Would make a beautiful gift for a crafter!

Great for all ages and abillities
What a great book! Within thirty minutes of getting this book, my ten-year-old son had absconded with it and within another half hour he had finger knitted a small bag. The photography is gorgeous and the projects are presented in an easy-to-follow (even for beginners) format. This is a great book for all ages and a great addition to the craft collection for beginner knitters and experts alike. Five stars.

Loved It!
Great book. One I will go back to time & time again. The projects are practical which is a plus & ones that I would use myself or gift. That was the main reason for choosing the book in the first place. Very pleased with my purchase.

Great book for beginners.
I really like this book! The projects are great and easy to follow. My only complaint is that most of the projects require a lot of yarn and can get pricey if you aren't careful.

Lovely book
I love everything about C S Lewis but this is written by 2 other authors as well so a bit disappointed.Book arrived earlier than expected but it was 3/4 covered by 2 layers of sticky white plastic which has taken me over an hour to get half it off. Then on the front was anotyiffher largish label with a barcode. This hasn't stopped me reading it although it's a bit stiff as the spine is still covered.I like to display my books but unless I can remove all the sticky stuff I'll have to keep it hidden.

No iPad covers, phone socks, or mug hugs = happy me!!!
Finally, a knitting book without yet another pattern for mug hugs (who on earth uses those things anyway?!) I love this book! It takes knitting to a whole different level and is great for people like me who can struggle with knitting needles due to arthritis. The infinity scarf is a popular one but Ann Weil gives us fresh ideas for it. There are even hats to be made from arm-knitting - nice ones too! There are also cushions, rugs, and the pouf seen on the front cover, amongst other items. As for finger-knitting, thankfully only two pages are wasted on the hideous finger-knitted necklaces which clog up similar books! There are patterns for hair bands, a skipping rope, and even baby booties all made from finger-knitting! There are explanations, with clear photos on techniques, but also descriptions of yarn thicknesses etc so even a non-knitter could start with this book. The photos are of modern interiors enhanced by knitted items, making knitting look bang on trend (which it is) but giving the book the feel of an interior design book as well as a craft book.I highly recommend this book - I don't think anyone would be disappointed with it and I'll definitely be seeking out more from Anne Weil!
