Season 1 - Defiance is the story of courage and survival in a place unlike any other you could imagine. Set in the wake of an alien conflict, a completely transformed planet Earth is inhabited by human and alien survivors forced to live and work together in the aftermath of this global catastrophe. Mysterious drifter Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler; True Blood, Lost), a former military lieutenant and his lone companion, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas; Whitechapel), settle in the frontier town of Defiance, where they join up with other inhabitants struggling to build a new society in this dangerous new world. Now they must stand together against outside forces that threaten their existence. United they stand. Divided they fall. It’s do or die in the town of Defiance.Season 2 - As Defiance’s second action-packed season begins, the lives of the townspeople remain in turmoil as Nolan (Grant Bowler) searches for Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), Amanda (Julie Benz) deals with a personal loss and Stahma (Jaime Murray) plots to take over Datak’s criminal empire. Meanwhile, Earth Republic’s control of Defiance brings changes with far-reaching consequences, including a scheming new mayor (James Murray) whose secret agendas push the town towards its breaking point. A great wee series
Took a fancy to watch this and wasn’t disappointed. Saw it when it first came out. Never seen it picked up on streaming which is a shame.

Bought for my Dad for his birthday and he absolutely loved it! In fact he took it on holiday and spent all of his evenings watching it with his wife! They both loved it!

Great series with a large array of characters
Great series with a large array of characters. Various alien species plus survivors struggle to survive while a sinister sort of regional government pulls strings in the background

Not brilliant
To start with was basically a Western with aliens! Got a bit more sci-fi towards end of season 1. Not enough back story of the original invasion, just the odd mention and flashback. Just about stuck with it but wouldn't recommend it unless your bored!

Disappointing
I picked this box set on the basis of the universally positive reviews here. My mistake. They're very misleading, so I'll average out the scores to reflect the very average reception this series actually received.First, it's not really sci-fi, more like a soap opera with certain individuals/families made up as 'aliens', by which I mean they have a bit of make-up and sometimes use foreign-sounding words. The other sci-fi elements are pretty weak - MacGuffins are the order of the day and if you like consistency you might find it difficult to watch. The characters always know more than the viewer - useful things like the fact that there are deadly aliens lurking in the undergrowth / nano-bug-implants / invincible armies of non-corporeal killers - but no need to worry because they always know how to fix it.Secondly the plot: How the aliens came to be on Earth is never fully explained. Wikipedia provides more background than all of the episodes combined, so if you're planning to buy this then start there before watching it. There is an overarching plot of sorts, and it almost makes the show into science-fiction. Almost. The day-to-day episodic plots are quite simplistic once the watcher realises that anyone with an English accent is the bad guy, even if they're made up as an 'alien'. Although, talking of bad guys...Characters. Third problem. None of the characters are likeable. They're all nasty and with one exception (unless I overlooked it), they're all callous killers - by the end of the second series they've all killed someone in cold blood. But that's okay, they can do that because the 'lawkeeper' (the main character) does it as well, and he doesn't seem to care whether anyone else does. I think he is supposed to be a loveable rogue - the only vaguely interesting part of the either season is where he gets called out as a misfit Han Solo - but his actions are at odds with this.So in short, a soap opera where everyone is a killer, there is no humour whatsoever, and the science fiction is an afterthought, seemingly inserted to justify the inane plots.

I was recommended this series by a friend and I live it. It reminds me of the sadly cancelled too soon series firefly.
