How the Immune System Works

A cult classic at my med school
Was heavily recommended this book by many upperclassmen, it did not disappoint. Easy to read, with beautiful, well-illustrated pictures. Can say I did better than others who didn't use the book on immunology that unit and retained the info well after that. I gifted it to my underclassman mentee when she started her 2nd year. Highly recommend.

Great book. I used this in addition to my textbook during an intro to immunology class, and it really helped solidify the concepts in an easy to read and concise way. Highly recommend for helping to keep focus on and understand the big picture when getting into the weeds of how the immune system works, or even just for a good general understanding of the immune system if you are not taking a class.

Key concepts are clear
Since this is written as lectures, it's easy to understand the key concepts. I work in the field of immuno-oncology and required a better understanding of the immune system and cycles. This book has helped me expand my knowledge up and above the basics of the immune system.

Simply The Best (Tina Turner's Voice)
Heaven-sent.If I had known. If I had known... this book existed when I struggled through immunology during my first year. Sweet goodness my life would have been so much easier when I waded through those trenches of cluelessness. Seriously *the* best immuno book I have read for a general overview of "need-to-knows" during medical school. I could have read this text in 5-7 days and simply sat in class and allowed my professors to reinforce information.I found this book towards the end of my immuno-micro course (3-wks at my school) and became pretty upset by how great it's written and the fact I had no idea it existed 2 weeks prior :(. I'm actually reading this the month before my step 1 study period starts to really learn immuno.Excellent Resource for Medical Students.

Great teaching add on.
This book was a fantastic add on to my immunology class. Made things very easy to understand. I wouldn’t purchase this as a main source of information but it was a great read as a intro into certain aspects of immunology.

Excellent book
I don't normally write reviews, but this is honestly one of the best textbooks I've ever read. It's clear concise and focuses on the big picture without negating the details. Additionally, it does a lot of teaching through analogy, which is exceptionally helpful when understanding such a complex system. I'm in medical school and this has been one of the best purchases I've made.

This must be one of the best ever overall explanations of the immune system to read before getting into the most minute details. I wouldn't have wanted to start immunology class without having read this primer first! In fact, it's what the teacher heavily recommended from UT Health San Antonio Science Center.

A superb book
Covid-19 was the catalyst, what are the issues regarding resultant immunity? Googling was a disaster, either low brow, kid stuff or professionally written articles for experts who know most of it anyway. This book is different, it deal with human immunology as a knowledge/memory issue AND pedagogic issue, it starts at the beginning and explains every term before using it. When you are done you have a very good understanding of the big picture as well as all the actors and their complex duties. The illustrations are amazing art, they are in detailed colour, they are fully labeled and concise, the details given are ALL those needed but not more, de-cluttered and immediately understandable and helpful to memory. The level it selected is deep enough for a real understanding of most immunization subjects, but doesn't get into the undergrowth of inorganic chemistry - Biochemistry, it is useful to know (google) main headings like peptides, lipids, carbohydrates and similar, but the book never goes beyond giving these complex structures a name (IL-12, D7 etc.)The author should be made the supervisor for writing study books, the order, the sheer pedagogic depth, the attention to detail of colour and illustration is just amazing.Declaration: I am not related to the author in any way, never met him and do not have any commercial interest in the book.

Estupendo punto de partida.
Aporta una visión global sobre el sistema inmunológico muy útil para entender otros libros que profundizan más en los detalles.

Fantastic Overview
You can tell when someone has such complete mastery of their subject because they can explain complicated things in an easy to understand fashion. Dr. Sompayrac does exactly this in his book, "How the Immune System Works".Idealy, this would be the first book that everyone learning about the immune system would encounter. After they have understood the big picture that this book so beautifully provides, they would be well situated to learn in greater detail. Highly, highly recommended!
