Such a great storyline
Second book in a long series but worth every moment spent reading. What drew my attention was further evolution of the Kreelans.

4.5 stars if the option were available
The second novel "Legend of the Sword" from the "In Her Name" series gives a reader some insightful and necessary information to more fully understand the former novel and the Omnibus trilogy stories. As wise as the Tesh Dar character appears in the Omnibus trilogy, we are allowed to see that she is, in fact, a flawed character with some human attributes that make her more likable. Considering she is a human character, I was impressed with the way the author was able to make this miracle occur. Even in the Omnibus series, I was not inclined to like her character, despite some of her actions that hinted at a softer side. Now, however, I more understand why her character seemed so distant and protected, despite her hidden love for some of the main characters in the Omnibus stories.I will simply say that "Legend of the Sword" is a very enjoyable read that is worth every penny and all of the time spent to read. The story line flows, you are reintroduced to main characters from "First Contact" and meet other strong and interesting characters as well. Truly, the author is being cheated by such a small price for this wonderful story!

Great series, wonderful writing
If you love CJ Cherry's Foreigner series you'll love Michael Hicks' writing; he's the first SciFi writer I've found to come close to C.J. Cherryh's masterful skill in story telling and character development. I recommend you read the three books in the Redemption series first and then this series. Michael Hicks characters, even the minor ones are extremely well developed and believable and his handling of the alien culture is not only believable but makes you want to know more about them. Legend of the Sword is another great book in this series, I've first six books in less than three weeks and right now I'm reading the First Empress which is a story taking place 100,000 years earlier. Both the Kreela and humans have very different motives for the war but you'll quickly come to care about characters on both sides. Michael Hicks does a superb job of bringing the Kreelans to life in a believable but unique manner. There is a fair amount of battling in this book, more so than in the three books of the Redemption series but it is still about very believable story about people, well people and Kreelans. The characters and their motives drive the plot which has it's share of surprises and even disappointments as happens in real life. Superb story telling!

GREAT follow up!
I wanted to get this review out there, because this is an amazing book! It's about as on-par in terms of excellence with First Contact, the previous book in this series. This story follows up on the characters that had survived from the first book, as well as gets a bit deeper into the story of Tesh-Dar, priestess of the Kreelan empire. She's a really interesting character, but for me the on-going story of Sato is fascinating. As typical of the series, it's fast paced, full of action, and the story itself is tightly woven. In a way, I think this story is far more tense than the first book, but I'm still at a loss as to which one is the better one. That is just great stuff right there! In addition, I'm a space naval combat junkie, so the detailed descriptions are just amazing and really filled in that void. It's VERY nicely written and you feel right there in the midst of the action. It really is a fast read, and with the action going on non-stop, it just leaves you breathless and wanting more at the end. Considering that the next book in the series will be waiting for you, that's a good thing. ;)Overall, is it worth it? HECK YES. Get it, you won't be disappointed!

A well written story with great characters
The In Her Name series are great. Probably, the first one I read, From Chaos Born (First Empress), would have resulted in my not continuing the series as it was a bit closer to fantasy rather than hard science fiction from my perspective. First Contact (The Last War), the first book of which I also received free, made me reevaluate and I ended up purchasing all the ebooks in the series. This is the 2nd book in the Last War series. The Last War series is about human's first contact with the Kreelan and the Kreelan bringing war to the humans. Each book introduces us to a different planet and brings in new characters but continues with prior characters, creating a thread throughout the stories. I know other reviewers have described the stories in each series, so I won't. My recommendation as to why you should read this book and all of them in each series is because the author has done a wonderful job of writing characters, world building, and dialogue. We experience the story and it moves forward jumping from the perspective of humans and the alien Kreelan.Significantly, the author in the Last War series provides us with contact with an alien species and a war in which their actions are not attributable to human motivations and responses. While it is first and foremost a huge story, the questions of - How do you fight an enemy that doesn't play by the rules you are used to? When an alien looks at humanity and doesn't see them as "people" by their criteria then what governs their rules on how you are treated. Can a herd animal earn respect? When another species' abilities are so far advanced do we see it as science or magic? Can we stop fighting between ourselves long enough to fight a bigger threat? The 9 books in this 3 series story is a huge tapestry, well written, with a balance of ideas and action.

A perfect storm, and the fog of war
Confederation warships head for the planet of St. Petersburg to investigate intelligence that the Russians are planning on building nuclear weapons contrary to legislation banning such weapons. The rulers of St. Petersburg are waiting for them in ambush, with a large number of new warships already armed with nuclear missiles. And the alien Kreelen have decided that St. Petersburg is their next objective in their war against humanity, and have launched a massive fleet of conquest. This is a recipe for a perfect storm.Michael R. Hicks continues the trilogy that began with First Contact (In Her Name Book 1), increasing the intensity of conflict against an alien race that has been richly imagined and described. For readers of science fiction, this is a feast that both satisfies, and also instills a hunger for what will happen next. You must start with First Contact. Meanwhile, I am more than ready to begin Dead Soul, In Her Name Book 3.

Great read
What a gripping story. I couldn’t put the book done (even at 2am). I can’t wait to read the next instalment.

A real good read
Amazingly imaginative. A real good read as a part of the trilogy. The imagination of the future with humans populating many worlds is pretty common. But the background of internal politics of fear in the face of a greater danger is really awesome...
