Jazz Method
Jody Fisher is a great player and teacher. The intermediate book explores improvization in more depth and gives the player the tools to analyze and play standards. By far the best Jazz instruction series available.

good book
This is a really easy to follow book. It's almost like your not learning anything. Don't get hung up on trying to do everything perfectly. Just work with the material for some exposure and FUN! Just take it easy.

Still one of the best, 20 years on
Bought the set of 3 (skipping the beginner vol) back in about 1996 as a player who listened to a ton of jazz, but played rock/blues with little idea how to break into jazz. I continue to use and study these books today, 20 years later, and consider it money well spent. Mine came without the accompanying CDs, so can't comment on the quality there, but wish I had them as some of the examples are almost useless without the CD examples (comping latin feels lesson, for example). Books are well written and logically structured, pretty easy to follow although I do quibble with some choices of how to present topics.

The 2nd of a series of 4 books
This is the second of a series of 4 books that cover arpeggio, modal, and chord melody theory for playing jazz guitar. They don't touch on the CAGED system at all which is a slight weakness, but these books are a great all-around quick education. I think each of these books is easily worth what you would get from a couple guitar lessons. A great deal.

Improved My Guitar Playing
This book taught me to view chords as notes of a scale, either played simultaneously or arpeggiated. Then spread across the fingerboard, so that voicings of a particular chord could be formed at several places on the guitar neck on various string sets. It also illustrates how to use the knowledge of chord tone locations as a frame within scales to provide notes to emphasise and target in improvisations. - It took me a year to assimilate this to where I could comfortably use it in my playing. Other topics are addressed as well including polychords and comping rhythms. I might have reached this level of understanding by myself in time but this book took me there a lot faster. I was certainly impressed by what the author has managed to accessibly present in under a hundred pages. And I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about the subjects covered.
