Q: What is the weird little "hook" type thing for...this is not at all like what came on the flush valve?

It is there to attach the chain to the flush lever.

Thank you for choosing Danco products. The way to attach the flush valve change to the flush lever is to push the v-clip on the flush arm through the two holes in the arm. Then put chain on v-clip at desired length and then take pliers to pinch v-clip closed to hold chain.

Q: Does anyone now the diameter of the chain? I'm using it for something else.

Thank you for your interest in Danco model# 88408 and for your inquiry. The balls on this chain are .1245" or almost 1/8" and the straight links between them are .029" in diameter.

Q: Is this different from a standard light pull chain I can get? I've been using pull chains for years and they rust and break 2-3 times a year.

Yes; it is Different from a standard, Because it is, (Chrome Plated), a standard pull chain is NOT; it will last much longer, (Now; let me tell you why?..Because City Water has (Chlorine) in it, chrome plated metal will last a little longer than a standard light pull chain......(NO CHAIN WILL LAST FOREVER)...Thank You.
