A GREAT "PRODUCT" -CAME IN PLASTIC FROM BLACK-BLUM- WILL GET FROM KISHU AGAIN NEXT TIME, WRAPPED IN PAPER!!
I got these same type of BINCHOTAN from Japan, charcoal filter sticks from a different provider (Kishu) and found them to be so super excellent that I wanted more. They came wrapped in paper, packed in paper and in a cardboard box, but found them here on Amazon and I was so happy. When I opened the package I was SO DISAPPOINTED: SEALED IN PLASTIC!!!!!!! I mean this is my lifestyle: use natural products, the least amount of plastic, and I find charcoal sticks from Japan that just plop into a glass Mason jar and make the tap water taste like SPRING WATER! These Black-Blum brand, came sealed in individual plastic packs, PLASTIC AIR FILLED PLASTIC packing!!! Just got them so will see if they're as good, but I am truly disappointed -ALL are practically the SAME SIZE! Were they were MADE in a factory!? If they work as well as the last ones I got, I will be glad, but I will NEVER get them from this company, Black-Blum Ltd, ever again. :-( And what's with all these pop up ads on AMAZON?! Can hardly see what I am trying to look at!?

Great, but bigger than expected
Putting this in a water bottle and letting it sit for a half hour or so works wonders. It is not necessary to wait 8 hours for fresh, clean tasting water. I took this with me on a trip to an area with horrid tasting tap water and was able to drink said water after this was in it for about thirty minutes. That said, this will not fit in some water bottles. This is lengthy and pretty thick - if your bottle is short and/or does not have an opening big enough for ice cubes, it probably won't fit. Also, while it does work quickly in a water bottle, it is not instantaneous. If you want instantaneous, go with a camelbak or brita bottle. If you want great tasting water from a glass bottle, this is one of your very few options.

Perfect!
I have been looking for a water filter that does not contain plastic, easy to use, and economical. Ive been using a brita water filter but i hate the fact that the water sits in plastic all the time...... These are great! Reasonably priced, easy to use and taste great! I drink a lot of water. So I purchased a ceramic water crock dispenser that fits nicely on my kitchen counter. I have two glass growlers that each have a charcoal stick in them. I keep those full so they can filter overnight and that way I always have fresh water available to put in my dispenser. I'm so happy I finally have a safe and easy water dispenser. It cost me a one time fee of $40 for crock and then it will be $16 a YEAR for the charcoal(since I use 2 at a time). And after 6 months you can use your charcoal as air purifiers for closets, decoration or to burn! It's awesome!

Works well in 2-gallon decanter
Black+Blum Charcoal: I boiled it for 10 minutes, rinsed it, and put it in a 2-gallon glass water decanter. The water taste improved dramatically. The water quality here is not as bad as some places I've been but, aside from the chemicals, there was a certain "flavor" to the water that wasn't particularly chemical. It made me feel that it was more like a hormonal effect--from all the pharmaceuticals getting into the water. I didn't know if charcoal would affect that, but it did improve it at least 80%. The purifying effect lasted at least 2 months, then I reused it with similar results. I refresh the water every night, so it sits with the charcoal at least 8 hours between uses.

Does result in clean tasting water!
The media could not be loaded. I've transitioned to a more zero-waste lifestyle and wanted an alternative to using plastic Brita water filters. This charcoal stick has been great and has resulted in clean tasting water for the past 2 weeks. All you have to do is activate/charge the charcoal by boiling the stick for 10 min and letting it cool. I bought a large (1.5 gal?) glass beverage dispenser from Michael's and popped the activated charcoal stick in the glass container. It will float at first, then sink, and you will see bubbles form along the charcoal as it filters the water. Love it!

Awesome water filter!
I often purchase charcoal water filter from various sources, and I find that this does the job just right for a reasonable price! How i normally test the effectiveness of these charcoal filter is I use the bottled water brand called "Arrowhead" which has a strange strong metallic taste to my mouth, and once I add this to my water bottle for an hour or so, it totally remove that strange after taste and it made the water sweet and addicting to drink!Tips: Even though it may seem like its ready to use right out of the package, It does have some charcoal dust on it still. I used a soft bristle toothbrush to gently dust it off under running water and then boil it for 15 mins. After that process it works wonder!

binchotan charcoal...nice
I am glad to have these charcoal sticks. They make drinking water easier, with a clear smooth taste. Not harsh like tap or even plain distilled H2O. They arrive single, vacumn sealed with printed directions on the outside of the packaging. My last order, did however, arrived with one of the sticks broken. I had contacted Black + Blum official with hopes for a replacement, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

It's not the size of the stick..
So far so good. The, ehem, stick pics of the product make it look bigger than I thought it'd be. But hey, whatever works for you! I uploaded one for perspective. I always had reservations about how well a Britta type product could filter very well with the super ultra mega fast filtering it does.. After hearing the science from some health food experts I think this is the way to go now. It lasts for quite a while too in comparison. I mean, if that's a big deal to you..

Disappointed
I fell in love with the romantic notion of purifying water following a tradition which is supposed to be centuries old. I bought a glass jar for the purpose. I boiled my charcoal in water to prime it. Then I put it in my glass jar and filled it with tap water. Did it overnight so that the water was cleaned for the eight hours required. Made our teas in the morning - need more water. No, wait - another eight hours? You have got to be kidding me. Perhaps this works in Japan in the countryside where each family has two barrels of water on the go and a mother at home the whole day to top up the water. It is totally impractical for me. In addition, it does not soften the water. I can confirm that the water tastes slightly better than pure tap water, but then again so might water allowed to sit for eight hours, without the filter. There was, disappointingly, still scum on the surface of the tea. So i have given in to modern technology and purchased a standard water filter jug which cleans and softens the water in seconds. The water from the filter jug tastes better than the charcoal filtered water too. We also have no scum on the surface of the water, no scale at all in our kettle and clean cups!!So, sorry. Romantic notion, but not up to the task.
