Can the arms be removed from the base to make it more portable?

Yes, the arms have a threaded rod in them that attaches to a nut in the rubber base on bottom side.

Can I get larger size alligator clips to hold a glass gem or regular size marble for soldering?

We don't offer a clip like you are asking for. But the ends where the clamps mount are a standard 8-32 male stud. So a metal bracket could be easily fabricated to hold a larger object. Additional arms with magnetic bases to attach to the QuadHands base are available if more than 4 arms are needed.

Are spare parts readily available? Can I get replacement stainless steel crocodile clips, knurled knobs, etc.

what is the size of the footprint of the base?

The base measures 8 1/4" front to rear and 8 1/8" across the widest point on the rear "feet". The Front is slightly narrower than the rear. In other words, this unit will fit inside an 8 1/2" square.
