Best mirror dashcam I tried to date
I don't give five stars easily but I must say this Pormido PR998S mirror dashcam deserves it. I've been looking for a good mirror camera for my extended Ford Expedition for about a month and have ordered and returned many different mirror cameras. They just did not do what I believe they should to be in par with today's technology. I've been using this Pormido camera for about a week now and I must say I finally I found it, Pormido did it for me. In order of importance to me.1.Day and Night performance (auto white balance/HDR2.image quality (resolution) with no lag3.Useful/convenient programming features.4. Physical DesignIn detail here are my findings:1. The "wash-out factor" (auto white balance or active HDR) To me this is the most important feature, without a good auto white balance and/or a HDR feature the camera, when in direct sun light or at night with headlights pointing towards the camera, it will washout the image and make the camera completely useless. This is the main reason I returned all the previous cams, which would, somewhat, washout a part of the screen when in direct sunlight and wash out a BIG part of the screen at night when other headlights shine on you.I must say that this Pormido cam does a very good job at both. In direct sunlight the rest of the screen where the sun is not located is still very clear and in contrast. At night, other headlights close to you pointing directly into the camera look white with a controlled circle around it.It does a good job in dimming what otherwise would make the the majority of the screen white. Initially I thought the "other headlights" were too bright and I contacted Pormido about it; they responded saying that that was the best balance of dark and bright that they could achieve otherwise the entire screen would be too dark at night and not show any detail. After one week of use I concur with them. It does have a pretty good balance between how much "headlights" light it can dim off versus how much light it can let in so you can see better detail and a brighter image at night.2.The image quality/resolution is very good, 2k in the front and 1080 in the back camera. I noticed in these cameras that the front is always pretty good but the back camera is what varies in quality between different cams. I have seen same claimed resolution of 1080 with very bad quality on one and very good quality on another like this cam.So far I have not seen any skips or lag in live view, seems it has a decent processor.3. Is this cam has a ton of useful programming features which most are in par with other cameras but a few that are not found in other cams such as: the reversing lines can be stretched or shortened to be customized to your car or your preference when backing up. Also when in reverse you can swipe with a finger up or down for best viewing angle and then next time you put it in reverse it will remember where you left it. Another feature that I like which is very important to me as I think the whole idea about having a mirror cam is that you're using it when you're driving to see the cars behind you better, with a wider angle and with more clarity thus.....I do not like a busy screen with all kinds of data on it that I cannot remove. On the right of the screen it shows the time and date. The time digits are pretty big with the date directly underneath it. It's nice to have it if needed but I think that needs to be an option because I would like to drive just using it as a rear view mirror. Thanks to Pormido, they added a programming feature to make that hidden when streaming a live image. I did not see this option in any of the other cameras that I tried. With the hidden feature on, to see the time and date (among other data) all I have to do is touch the screen once and the info stays on screen for a few seconds and then disappears. Perfect. To me that is the best of all worlds. I believe the "customer" should have full control of what shows on the screen and what doesn't when you are driving. When recording there's a little red blinking dot on the top left of the screen to confirm that it's recording which is perfect but also it shows a little timer next to it. (some folks might like this on all the time, I just don't, it's distracting) I wish the timer had an option to hide it. Also even though I have not received my module yet, with a GPS module it shows two big vertical lines with the direction that you are driving N, W etc in between the two lines on the left middle of the screen. I wish there was an option to hide these two big vertical lines as well.It would be very easy for them to add these "hidden function" features via a firmware upgrade. Even though these are not deal breakers for me because this cam is excellent it would be very nice to have full control of the screen display. With these features, it would make this the perfect mirror camera. I am going to write to them and suggest to add these features maybe they will listen to me.4. Physical Design, so far, by what I have seen, this is the only camera where the front camera is completely detached from the actual mirror unit itself. To me this is a huge advantage because you can place the front camera lens closer to the window thus reducing glare, move it to any position you want and when installing the unit over your original mirror you can center it perfectly which you cannot do with a mirror camera that has the lens built into the unit. It will always stick a little bit to the left of your original mirror. In summary after trying many mirror dash cams this is by far the best one and I'm keeping this one.I hope this review was helpful to someone.

The dash cam i have been looking for!
PORMIDO PR998 mirror cam β FIRST IMPRESSION - Oct. 2021. Updated - Feb. 2022I have been using dash cams on my vehicles for the last 12 years, moving up and upgrading to newer and better products as they come to the market. Not that I really need them, just LOVE the technology.Recently I was looking for a rear view camera and a small (7β) monitor screen. I did see mirror dash cams on Amazon, but they all had the front cameras integrated with the mirror screen. That limited the options for me. β¦And then I found PORMIDO PR998.The PORMIDO PR998 has answered all my needs so far. It is a great system to have in your car, especially if you have obstructed rear view mirror (truck cap, RV, etc.) and even if you donβt.Here is what I like about Pormido PR998 mirror dash cam:1. The front camera is separate from the mirror, therefore it can be placed anywhere (and not only on the windshield).2. Both cameras have SONY HD (1296P) lenses with WDR.3. The 12β mirror screen has brightness adjustment and on-screen menu. To access the menu just touch the screen with your finger β the menu will appear at the bottom of the screen. From there you can:a. Switch cameras view from back to front or see them both on the split screen;b. Take a snapshot from any camera β just touch the snapshot icon;c. Start or stop recording;d. Lock or unlock currently recording file;e. Play back a file;f. Enter the settings (you will need to stop the recording first).4. I absolutely love the ability to adjust the view in the mirror for either camera just by sliding your finger up or down on the screen. No need to adjust the camera! There is also no need to adjust horizontal view β the field of view of the rear cam is 150Β°, you can even see the blind spots.5. The rear camera.a. If you are using it as a back-up camera, it has adjustable guide lines. Just touch the end of each line on the screen with your finger and move it to where it works for YOUR vehicle.b. If you use it as a rear view camera it can be installed up or down and the image can be flipped over in the settings. (updated firmware is required for that);c. I have tinting on my rear window (5% - limo black) and the camera is located inside β the view during the day is actually better than it was in my OEM mirror! At night, not so muchο.6. The tech support is just wonderful. I had multiple questions (there was nothing wrong with the product, I always have specific questions about new items) and they replied within a few hours, considering the time difference, of course.I have had this system for a few days only, but I am already loving it. This is the system I was looking for. If you need (or wantο) dual channel system with big, 12β display (vs. 2.5β) that you can actually see β PORMIDO PR 998 is the one to get. The price is very reasonable too (plus $30 off coupon).I highly recommend it.I am including some detailed pictures of the components of the system for those who need them. I know, I was looking for the details BEFORE I purchased it, but couldn't find them.Update: in the new FW update they added zoom on the rear view camera (for those who use it as such). Not big zoom, because you start loosing the view angle, but zoom nevertheless. Also, my unit has a separate GPS receptacle (3.5 mm)UPDATE 2/22/22I have had this system for a few months now and I STILL LOVE IT! In the beginning the mirror screen was a bit distracting (I kept glancing at it enjoying the clear and wide picture behind me) but now I am used to it. I am not going back to OEM mirror. I have also installed a cap (camper shell) on my truck. Now this system became an essential addition to my vehicle. The rear camera is located inside of the cap behind lightly tinted glass door. The image is perfect in a bright sunny day β the tint helps to remove glare. In the overcast the image is still great β the tint does not effect it.Night image on lit streets not perfect, but it is good enough to know whatβs behind you and the wide view, IMO, compensates for a little darkness. On the dark roads the view is exactly the same as it would be in OEM mirror β dark ο.I still highly recommend this system.I also purchased a hardwire kit for my PR998 (2 cameras). This kit provide power to the cameras when the engine is off and G-sensor activated (e.g. someone hits your parked vehicle). Installation was very easy, although would be nice to have a bit more wires. Works great with my dashcam. I tested it myself just bumping into my car to see how much impact is needed to activate the sensor. So far, in two days without driving, it did not kill my battery. Great kit.
