Legendary assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) retired from his violent career after marrying the love of his life. Her sudden death leaves John in deep mourning. When sadistic mobster Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) and his thugs steal John's prized car and kill the puppy that was a last gift from his wife, John unleashes the remorseless killing machine within and seeks vengeance. Meanwhile, Iosef's father (Michael Nyqvist) -- John's former colleague -- puts a huge bounty on John's head. Review: A Near Perfect Revenge Movie - "John Wick" has achieved a legendary status among action movie fans, but this was my first time watching it. It absolutely blew me away and I never wanted it to end. The short description is that it's about a guy who sets out for revenge against the man who kills his dog. The full story is much more complex. At the beginning of the movie, we meet John Wick (Keanu Reeves), a man grieving the loss of his wife to terminal illness. As he struggles to go on without her, he get a small dog as a posthumous gift from his wife to help him grieve. The moment when Wick gets the dog is some of the finest and most understated acting I've ever seen from Reeves. That's why it's more devastating when the disaster occurs. At a gas station, a gang of Russian thugs led by Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen) try to buy his classic sports car. When Wick refuses, they break into his house at night, steal the car, and kill the dog. It's kind of a slow up until that point, but that's when the movie shifts into high gear and never stops. The Russians turn out to be mobsters who are all too familiar with John Wick, a retired assassin so good he even scares other assassins. Wick sets out to kill Iosef with ruthless determination. I love a good revenge movie, and "John Wick" is the best I've ever seen. Wick is a force of nature as he guns down, karate chops, and drives over countless thugs in his quest for justice. One of the best aspects of this movie is the glimpses of the shadowy underworld that Wick lives in. He stays in a secret hotel for assassins, hires special teams to get rid of dead bodies, and pays for it all with special gold coins. Wick knows everyone, and they all know and fear him. Even the police know better than to cross him. In the end, "John Wick" is about more than just a guy running around killing. It's about Wick's quest for happiness and how his past has made it impossible to live a normal life. You feel like he's a tortured soul who just wants to find a closure that never comes. As a movie, "John Wick" is incredibly well made with action sequences in hotel rooms, night clubs, and on the streets of the city. The camerawork is great, the acting is powerful, fighting is always clear, and Wick's moves are always thrilling. Emotionally heart-wrenching and visually stunning, "John Wick" is simply a masterpiece. I never thought Reeves would ever find a role to match Neo in the Matrix series, but he was born to play John Wick. Looking forward to Chapter 2. Review: Great movie - Great action movie

Fun, violent, highly stylized action adventure movie about revenge
Very stylized but fun to watch action-adventure film, definitely not realistic, but also breaking with current trends not really a superhero film (no one has super powers, wears a costume or mask or cape, though one can argue that John Wick is a bit superhuman in his abilities to fight, shoot, and survive some gruesome wounds). The film at its most boiled down is about a retired hit man, having just lost his wife to a long illness, is victimized by thugs who break into his house at night, beating him up, taking his beloved vintage car, and killing the cute puppy his now deceased wife had sent to him, a final gift and link to a woman he dearly loved. John had been peaceful, out of the game, and seemed content to grieve, enjoy his car, and take care of the puppy until this is all robbed from him. John, brushing off attempts to make peace from the father of the head thug who did this (the man John used to work for, Russian mob boss Viggo Tarasov, played by Michael Nyqvist), John proceeds to go into the basement, use a sledge hammer to unearth the guns and currency he had entombed, and seek Massive Bloody Vengeance. His goal ostensibly to kill the thugs directly responsible (including the son of Viggo, Iosef, played by Alfie Allen), John has to kill lots and lots of people in the way, including all the hitmen, bounty hunters, assassins, and guards that are either protecting Iosef or are sent directly to go kill John). If you are looking for character arcs or exploring the depths of John’s soul, you won’t get that, other than to perhaps see how shallowly buried John’s hitman past was. What you do get is exciting, highly stylized action (lots of gun fights but gun fights incorporated into basically martial arts and fist fights, guns used at very close range, though there are longer range gun fights and fights without guns). You also get entry to a very stylized world, of an underworld where people pay in golden tokens, there are places with strongly enforced rules (such as the Continental, a hotel for criminals that is rigidly enforced as neutral territory and permitting no assassinations), and there are professional cleaning services everyone uses to remove bodies and clean crime scenes before any cops show up. The pacing was excellent, there was some good humor though by no means it is a comedy, and a good cast, with two secondary characters I really liked being Avi (played by Dean Winters, of “Mayhem like me” fame) and Marcus (played by William Dafoe, an assassin friend of John’s). It was a fun movie and I can see why it is popular.

Iconic for a reason
What can you say about John Wick other than it's become a staple series for the action-forward crowd for good reason. This film is all about solid action wrapped in a fun plot and boy does it deliver. The action sequences are immaculate and the fact that John Wick isn't some guy who never gets hurt makes him that much more likeable as a character. The fact that his driving force is almost entirely about avenging the death of his family dog will make it very endearing to many viewers, though for me that felt a bit like a play on people's love of that particular animal. Still, the action in this film is amazingly filmed, really well choreographed and is just super satisfying. You don't feel like it's all about fights either. You care about John and his success, which is a feat most action films can't achieve. David Leitch is a master at blending fantastic action with great characters, memorable dialogue, iconic moments, and just really solid film making. I'd recommend not only this film, but almost any of his films to anyone who wants to take an indulgent dive into the action film genre. You won't be disappointed.

love all the John Wick movies
John Wick is a game-changer in modern action cinema, introducing audiences to a stylish, gritty world of assassins with Keanu Reeves delivering a career-defining performance. The film combines tight, intense choreography, inventive gun-fu combat, and sleek cinematography to create action sequences that feel both visceral and elegant. Beyond the action, the story of a grieving husband seeking revenge provides emotional depth that sets it apart from typical revenge thrillers. The world-building — including the Continental and assassin code — is compelling, laying the foundation for an exciting franchise. A must-watch for action lovers.

John Wick

Welcome Back Keanu:)
Well, that was bracing! Welcome back Keanu! This little film that could got fairly dazzling reviews from critics and fans alike as it is stripped down, fast paced, edgy action fare. There are levels to this picture and solid acting on Keanu's part which make John Wick more than a standard revenge pic. A later expositional scene between John and Viggo Tarasov (Michael Nyvquist) blasts the veneer of a basic revenge actioner and reveals the true cause of this reckoning laced foray in one painfully delivered epiphanic statement. Honestly, the film could be a great film simply from a dramatic standpoint on coping with loss. I know it is still vogue for many to undermine and diminish Mr. Reeves as a one trick pony, but any who do so have not seen him in Sam Raimi's "The Gift" where he truly acted formidably as a vicious, hateful and memorable character. His foray in Constantine (also somewhat derided) illustrates that this man can reach beyond straight laced action performance. The scenes noting his relationship with his wife, Helen (Bridget Moynahan), her passing and the loving gift she leaves him to aid in his moving on afterward are beautiful. The interactions between John and Daisy, the beagle puppy his wife leaves him, are poignant and emotionally rendered. This however is not a drama so we know bad things will occur to our protagonist and when they do, we feel immediate outrage as without knowing his backstory, we give a damn about John and this is the strength of this film. The creators of this gem, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski formerly part for the stunt team from the groundbreaking Matrix franchise do a terrific job at making this film fantastically, frenetically physical. This film is David Leitch's directorial debut. The martial arts fighting in this movie is fast, close quartered and intensely effective. The duo create a John Wick mythos without previous source material. Within ten minutes of the film you are aware, believably, that John is a man you should not tangle with. The deeply personal point of "you never really know someone so you should probably respect everyone" is epically depicted. Really, the whole onslaught is brought about by an incident of disrespect from a younger man toward an older man over a car. I have no doubt that many a battle has been triggered over some small matter. This film illustrates this notion succinctly at a tight 92 minutes of pacing, violence and due gravitas. The main players besides John are Viggo, head of the New York Russian crime syndicate, his son Iosef (Alfie Allen), the great Willem Dafoe (Marcus), an unknown variable and associate of John's and Ms. Perkins (Adrianne Palicki)* as a fellow assassin. There are other actors who contribute, namely Lance Reddick as the Contintential hotel concierge Charon (so aptly named), demonstrating wry wit, intelligence and knowledge in a few cool scenes and of course, the great Ian McShane as the hotel owner, Winston, playing a role he could play in his sleep, but still delivers with sly gusto. One of the finer touches in this film is that a code of honor still exists amongst people in the assassin trade. The hotel is a refuge for such folk. There is one rule at the Continental and it is that no business can be conducted on premises. All must abide by it or "incur penalties" per Winston later ably demonstrated. *The fight scene between Perkins, who accepts the contract from Viggo, and Wick is top tier. Ms. Palicki currently establishing herself on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. demonstrates her viability as a rising action character. "John Wick" is not all grim seriousness however. There is humor and good humor at that. The funny touches include Wick's calling upon resources, such as a clean up crew with ease despite a 5 + year absence from the hitman trade. His ordering "dinner reservations for twelve" and easy interaction with the cleaners is funny as hell. A police response due to a "noise complaint" from the annihilation which occurs at John's house after Viggo orders a strike on him is simply hilarious: Officer Jimmy: John. John Wick: Jimmy Officer Jimmy: You working again? John: No, just some stuff I have to sort out. Officer Jim: Ok, then, I'll leave you to it. John: Goodnight Jimmy Just loved this scene, so straightlaced and as such, awesome. Naturally, a man who had been a fearsome hitman working for a host of clients would make connections throughout various agencies. Watching this one in play was just perfect. Back to my earlier point, about not truly not knowing someone. The whole film stems from an incident at a gas station where John is gassing up his vintage 69 Mustang. Iosef and his crew are doing the same when the younger Tarasov spots John's car and compliments it initially before asking him how much, when John states it is not for sale, the younger man insults him in Russian to which John replies in kind. The later violence which ensues at John's home is unjustifiable and reaps massive casualties and due havoc. More finesse marks are demonstrated via Iosef trying to deal with one of his father's chop shop owners, Aurelio (John Leguizamo), who refuses him service then slaps him noting it isn't what he took but "who he took it from." A fine touch is the follow up call when Viggo is about to tear his subordinate a new one for striking his son and Aurelio advises Iosef stole from John Wick. The response of "oh" is telling and the actions which ensue along with the revelation to Iosef from Viggo that John was his master assassin who essentially aided him in building his foothold on organized crime and completed an "impossible task" of eliminating his competition in order to leave the hitman life behind. The association of J.W. with the nickname "Baba Yaga", an East European boogeyman/boogeywoman is brilliant. Viggo's follow up that John "is not the boogeyman, but the man you hire to kill the boogeyman" could be straight fromage, but it isn't. It is chillingly spoken and followed by the cool touch of Viggo singing a Russian nursery rhyme about Baba Yaga as John prepares for war. So goddarn good. Not your standard actioner. Easily lends itself to franchise-ability which is why I am hoping they don't do so. Simply outstanding, adrenaline laced awesomeness which is absolutely well worth your time.
