Did I spend 40 bucks on a net? Does this not come with a hammock?

Yes. This net is a sold-separately product.

Does it come with tree straps?

The hammocks do not come with hanging straps. The Guardian Bug Net does not need straps as it attached to the carabiners at the ends of each hammock.

How is the zipper oriented? Is it vertical on one side or does it run the length of the bug net?

This bug net does not have a zipper. It is closed via cord cinches at both ends.
