This book is one of my all-time favorite books. I read my father's edition of it in the 1950s and of course, wanted to be an archaeologist! But given my lack of math skills, I ended up being an art historian instead. I bought this paperback edition as a gift to my post-grad museum intern who is working part-time in Europe in archaeology. He was not familiar with the history of the profession.

I have the original book, edited in 1943 in german from my father. So, this was a gift for somebody as involved in history like I am.Everybody should read this book and learn a little more about the passed of so many fascinating worlds....Very easy to read and to go "into the passes". This is a must for anyone looking to fill in some pretty wide archaeological gaps.

HOWEVER THE BOOK I RECEIVED IS LACKING THE DUST COVER - THE ONE PICTURED AND THE ONE ON MY FATHER'S BOOK.

I once had a copy of this book, and loved it. Glad I can read it yet again. If you want to get someone excited about archeology, suggest this book.

This is one of the first books on archeology I ever read. It started a life long hobby that remains strong today. Well written and easy to read, Delves into each section in an easy to read manner. A wonderful look at the beginnings of ancient archeology..

The books reads like a adventure stories of all those pioneers who dared to dream to dig deeper into our past. The language is easy to understand and is quite relevant till date. Good for people who love archeology and adventure.I gave it 1 less star because somehow the paper quality of the book and printing seems sub-standard. It's kinda quality which you find when buying books from seedy roadside stalls or at the traffic light. So a bit disappointed from the book production side.

Are you into the romance of archeaology? Do you love stories about uncovering ancient mysteries? Then this is the book for you. I first read it as a teenager and have read it every decade since. It was the book that made me an historian.

Good copy

I bought this book for my son who is studying this subject. It was late arriving and was a real disappointed when it did. On the description it said that it was of good quality and the price was higher than others that were for sale. When we opened it it was obviously well used and should have been described as such. A very misleading description of the book overall.
