Clever and intuitive detective
Didn't really understand the "on the negative" review from R M Wills. On the positive which he/she didn't touch on, I read 30/40 books a year and have done for 20 years. For me the test of a good book is, does it hold your interest throughout? Books that do this are becoming harder to find, especially crime novels. This one passes the test easily. I felt no confusion at all with the moving time periods and the plot was weaved in such a way that it was wholly credible and kept you guessing chapter after chapter. As for the characters, apart from Maxine who was a bit too middle class and a bit too good to be true, they were all excellent, particularly the genial Irishman, the 1920s detective Stanley Oldknow and the crazy old lady in the "dotty speak" chapter. The star character of the book though is without doubt the jaded, flawed councillor Danny Senetti. His cynical monologues are perfect and are absolute gems. His homily on why women won't meet you alone in a pub is unreservedly spot on and hilarious. His discourse with Archie is highly entertaining and he is also a very clever and intuitive detective. I would recommend this book to anybody.

Improbable but compelling plot
Great literature, no, but a page turning read, oh yes. I am a reader and finished this book with a feeling of jealousy that the author could think up such an intricate story and create characters which leave you eager for the next book.
