Play Cello Today!: A Complete Guide to the Basics (Play Today!)

Get this book and you will be enjoying your cello very shortly. I think all beginner books should be written this way, with the play along audio embedded in the text. I hope there will be a sequel.

Bought several cello beginner books as was given a cello for Christmas. This was my favourite of the ones ordered. It was easy to understand and gave the necessary information for playing a cello without assuming you were an imbecile or had never looked at a sheet of music in your life, nor did it waste space with unnecessary info and facts that were not relevant. It was also suitable for any age, unlike some which are clearly aimed at primary school children. There is a mix of exercises/tunes to play, some just made up for the exercise and some well known tunes that everyone would recognise. It also had a very simple to understand fingerboard chart at the back of the book so anyone who can already play a stringed instrument could simply check which notes were where. An hour or two later sorted out which notes are where and despite being terrible at reading bass clef, I am managing to have a go at a theme from Game of Thrones that my son rushed to hand me the minute I had got the thing strung and tuned! I doubt I would have managed as well as I have so far were it not for this book. I ordered several and this was the only one I felt delivered the necessary info without drowning you in things you didn't need to know. Given that I am terrible at reading bass clef and usually play violin or drums, I would say that this book also ought to be helpful to anyone who wishes to learn from scratch without being overwhelmed and having got straight online after half an hour of it to order the next in the series was disappointed to find there is only one for cello but several for other instruments as would have happily bought the next 3 in the series had they existed.

Having decided to learn the cello, found this to be very helpful, informative and takes you through at a good pace

It helps you along and also when your tutor comes along, and he explains what the notes are for then you begin to understand it more.
