The World of Poldark

The World of Poldark is a beautiful tie in to the splendid PBS series
Winston Graham and I have history! I relished his twelve books about Ross Poldark and his lovely wife Demelza and their family; saw all the episodes of the PBS series from the 1970's featuring Robin Ellis as Poldark and enjoyed the six seasons of the new series with Adian Turner in the starring role. Poldark is set in the beautiful county of Cornwall in the west of England. The series takes place in the late eighteenth century following the life and career of Captain Ross Poldark who returns from service in the American Revolution to find his love Elizabeth has married his cousin Francis Poldark, his father has died and his farm is ramshackle. The World of Poldark is a lush picture book based on the PBS series. We the readers learn background information on the cast, characters and history of the Cornwall region and life in English society during the Georgian era. Anyone who loves Poldark will enjoy this fun and informative book.

Not much here
Really brief text that left me wanting a lot more. The detail is all fluff and even though I enjoyed the pictures it was a 30 minute read with nothing to bring you back. Compare it to the detail of the Victoria companion book or those of Downtown Abbey and you will be very disappointed. I wish I hadn't wasted my money.

Great companion to the series and a bit of history
This is a really well-done book. The photos are excellent and it's interesting to read about the how actors/actresses were chosen as well as all that went into the filming of the series. What really sold me on the book was the included history of the era, everything from gambling to mining to the dreaded putrid throat are covered. Granted the histories are not extensive, but they are enough to give you a basic insight which I think lends to a greater enjoyment of the series. If you have not had a chance to see the original series, I highly recommend you seek them out, it is well worth the time to watch both series as they each bring something to the story.

Great Pictures and Backgroung information on BBC/Masterpiece Series
I only found out about Poldark 2 months ago. I was looking for something to watch on Amazon besides Downtown Abbey for the unteempth time. After viewing a Poldark on Amazon, bought this book for the pictures and background information on filming of the series.Good background book on the filming of the series. This book is only about the BBC/Masterpiece series and isn’t about the Wi stone Graham novels.

Very Informative
At first I was hesitant to purchase this book. Having read 11 of the 12 Poldark books I was not ready to start the final book. Being addicted to Poldark led me to read The World of Poldark. I found this book extremely fascinating and resourceful.

Nice collage of Poldark creation and era
This is a lovely, readable book about the era Poldark is set in, the creation of the characters, the care that was taken for everything to be authentic, and it had interesting vignettes into the history. It highlighted social customs, foods, and everyday life. I admit I have never seen Poldark but bought this as a gift for my sister who is a huge Poldark fan -- but I had to read the entire book before giving it to her! Fix yourself a hot cup of tea and enjoy!

Loved it!
Absolutely fantastic! Great photos, a lot of easily digestible historical background information - this book really takes you through the 1st season, episode by episode, while also giving you details about the "making of", the actors, directors etc. This is not the first time that I have bought a book describing a series or a film, bt it is definetely by far the best! Thanks, Emma Marriott!

Very disappointing!
Very disappointing in that it was a picture album of actors. I wanted information about the real sites used for the filming of Poldark, as I am visiting the Truro area of Cornwall and woul like to visit Nampara Cove, or Hendrawna beach. One look through this book is enough, there is no desire to keep looking at it.

Cornish vista.
This was a birthday present for my sister-in-law. I wasn't sure what her view would be but I got a lovely enthusiastic phone call raving about it. She loved everything. So happy to see her happy.
