Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy (Nintendo 3DS)

At last....a new Layton game!The first thing to note is that this is not a game starring the good Professor Hershel and his assistant Luke...this time we get to meet his daughter Katrielle.....But not to worry, as you progress through the game there are a number of old friends for you to meet, and a whole horde off new friends to make (and be prepared to grin/wince at some of the excruciating puns that are perpetrated in their names!)The game play will be familiar to anyone who has played a Layton game before...move to different locations, chat to people, solve some puzzles, look out for hint-coins. One big difference is that the game is divided up into mini-adventures that you can solve independently...rather than the previous idea of having one major mystery to solve....This has one advantage - after each mini adventure is solved, you have the option at any point to go back and explore the area and each location will tell you how many unsolved puzzles and unfound coins there are....which makes it easier to get a 100% completion, no more pesky wandering around looking for that last puzzle!...There IS an underlying linking storyline, but this is very much in the background.The standard of the puzzles remains somewhat mixed...some are almost too easy...some are rather tricky...and a fair few are 'trick' questions - so be warned! There is certainly plenty of puzzle-variety.There are the usual 3 minigames....a rather bland menu-selection game (during the main game you will be given new recipes and new customers...it is just a matter of trial and error to sort out their preferred menus)...a shop-design game which is head-scratchingly satisfying in later levels....and my favourite, Hound in the Pound - a maze game that has two levels - solve the puzzle and get the dog through the maze (relatively easy) and a harder lever to complete the game in minimum moves (very tough for some of them).In addition you get 2 extra activities...during the game you collect a few special fashion-farthing coins which will allow you to buy new outfits for Katrielle...and for every 5 puzzles solved you get a token which allows you to redesign the Office area.....these are diverting for a minute or two, but don't really add much to the game itself.Finally you get the usual heap of extra puzzles and bonus daily puzzles.(a full year's worth of dailies!)The high points for me include the animation (as clear and bright and amusing as previous Layton games)....some of the new characters, especially Sherl!....The movement between locations is similar to the Layton/Wright crossover, and so much simpler and quicker than in standard Layton game....plus the ending is very much open to a 2nd outing for Katrielle and friends!The main drawback is the lack of a solid storyline....but this is really only a niggle.There is plenty of gameplay for your money...and this is a fine addition to the Layton series.

A great continuation of the series. I cant get enough of these!I only have a few slight peeves - disappointing it isnt 3d like the previous 3ds versions of laytons (bit of a misnoma to call it a 3ds game imo....), when new location appears you have to then select map mode to get there (minor but annoying! As is being told how to use a map! duh!), and not being able to select the bike straight from the map.Apart from these things, very enjoyable and great new characters. Recommend if you're a fan of any of the previous games or like puzzles and/or visual novels. Also, try Ace attorney/phoenix wright if you like these.

I absolutely loved this game! I have played all the Professor Layton games and love the change of lead. Although I always loved the Professor, though it is great that they can revive the series with a female lead! I like the fact there are mini adventures instead of the one really long story as it is easier to follow if you can't sit down for long periods of time to play it. I also like the fact that once you solve a case it shows you how many puzzles you left behind so you can go back and search for them! Though it would be interesting to see what they do if they bring out a long story game instead. Excited to see the next instalment​.

From what I've seen at the moment a lot of the puzzles try to trip you up in the same way and all require the same kind of thinking to solve. For example I'll get an answer and immediately know its not the answer and it was too easy to reach. All in all its a great game with a great story at the moment. Worth getting it you want to keep yourself sharp.

I pre-ordered this game for my daughters birthday. Arrived on the day of release & the price guarantee meant I saved money as the price had dropped between me ordering it & it being dispatched.Can't really comment too much on the game content as I'm not the one playing it, however my daughter has said how much she enjoys the game & has hardly put it down since receiving it. A good sequel to the fantastic Professor Leyton games.

Excellent, just completed the game and the storyline and graphics are amazing. Lots of challenging puzzles and you get decorate your office when you collect decor coins and you can buy clothes for the main character with fashion farthing coins.

I love the professor Layton games and have bought the whole series but this one is not as good. There are lots of very small stories to investigate with a lot of unnecessary dialogue. I’m sorry to say that it is quite boring.

It would not play on my 3ds because I recieved a terrible one.
