This six-disc box set draws together all six volumes of the Tom and Jerry Classic Collection and is packed with nearly nine hours of cartoon capers from everyone's favourite cat and mouse. Volume 1 Collecting together the works of each producer, Classic Collection Volume 1 starts with the cartoons of the great Fred Quimby and also includes the Hanna Barbera years 1940-1958. Hollywood legend Quimby is largely regarded as creator of the very best Tom and Jerry episodes. He won seven Academy Awards for various Tom and Jerry shorts and received numerous nominations for his animated works. Volume 2 Tom and Jerry Classic Collection Volume 2continues with the works of Hollywood legend Fred Quimby, who worked closely with Hanna Barbera and together they set the high standard of animation, music, timing and humour for which Tom and Jerry are renowned. Classic Collection 2 includes the Academy Award-winning cartoon shorts "The Cat Concerto" and "The Little Orphan", the Academy Award-nominated "Dr Jekyll and Mr Mouse" and "Hatch Up Your Troubles", plus 20 other classics. Volumes 3 and 4 Tom and Jerry Classic Collections 3 and 4 brings together the works of Hollywood legends Fred Quimby, Gene Deitch, Chuck Jones and Hanna Barbera, the dream team who presented the pair at their brawling best and won 7 Academy Awards along the way. Volumes 5 and 6 of the Tom and Jerry collection features 58 cartoons, each packed with yet more crazy cat and mouse antics. As Tom and Jerry collections go, this takes some beating. Note: The discs without the print of disc numbers are double sided discs.

Lots of laughs still to be had!
I bought this set after I introduced my 4 year old son to Tom and Jerry on YouTube. On there, the best quality videos were just compilations on the Warner channel. It did my head in and I had to explain to my son that when I was a kid, we saw the whole cartoon and not just clips. The cartoons are great and my 4 year old loves them. He laughs big belly laughs at these classics. They are not properly remastered like the ones on the Warner YouTube channel clips though but they are still the best quality I have seen compared to anywhere else. The discs are double-sided. I have never seen DVDs like that before so I initially thought that the first 4 discs were missing the picture. And that some of the episodes were missing. Silly me. They are all there. The early ones, the best ones by Hannah-Barbera and Fred Quimby and also the later 60s Chuck Jones ones which I disliked but my son laughs loudest at!As far as I can tell, these cartoons are as originally shown and include the house keeper that frequently battered poor ‘Thomas’. As we know these cartoons were of their time and the Warner compilations on YouTube seem to have excluded her and other elements. I’m glad she’s in as she is part of the show. Some sequences in the cartoons probably would not get broadcast these days so it’s a good way of seeing them in their entirety. The set loses a star simply because the box broke really quickly and easily in the place where you open the box. And as you know with a 4 year old, you are going to get asked “can I have the one where...” so the box is opened and closed often.I recommend the set to anyone who loved Tom and Jerry when they were younger and if you want to show them to your own children.

Absolutely classic
First, to clear up any confusion, this set consists of the equivalent of 12 DVDs, which are recorded onto 7 discs, 5 of which are double-sided. That means that you get 14 hours and 48 minutes worth of cartoons or, to put it another way, a grand total of 159 of them. These are the originals, before they were made on a production line for television. In other words they are well-drawn, well-scripted and - most importantly - actually funny. My grandson loves them and, I must confess, so do I.LATER: Having now had chance to watch them all, we found volume 10 to be absolute drivel. Whoever was responsible had no idea of slapstick humour, none whatsoever about scripting, nor of appropriate music. All the episodes were atrocious. Volumes 11 and 12 are rather better, and certainly watchable, although not quite up to the standard of volumes 1-9. Still, that gives nine volumes directed by the great Fred Quimby and so makes the set a good buy by anyone's standards, even with the lesser stuff at the end.
