Wish I'd bought this a year ago.
Although the book gives more information than needed for the A+, it does it in a way that fills out the narrative so that you get a better understanding of the topic. Rather than just hit you with a bunch of facts to learn. There are a few times when you feel 'well that escalated quickly', like around chapter 12 where you go from this is a keyboard, a mouse, a hard drive to suddenly setting permissions and learning command lines.I think this is because of what's on the A+ rather than how the author would write it if he was writing a straight guide to computers. All in all, the book keeps being interesting when read front to back on first read through. And has enough notes and tips that you can take more interest in and take your own notes on for subsequent readings.I wish I'd bought this book a year ago instead of 4 weeks ago as my exam is in a few weeks so am cramming it a bit.

Excellent resource for IT Technicians, not just A+ exams.
Excellent book for Computer Technician's in general and for A+ 900 series exams in particular. I have heard much about the Mike Meyer's style of writing (never having read any of his material before) and I have to say I am a fan. As someone who studied computing years ago and is looking to return to the field, I have found this an excellent resource so far, so much so that I have already booked to do the A+ exams, so confident am I that I will get everything I need from this book combined with some tutoring I am currently receiving. The book is very easy to follow and I believe even someone with limited IT knowledge could gain a lot from it. Great resources on the enclosed CD including PDF copy of the book and a 10% discount code off the exam fee too. All in all I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in PC's in particular and IT in general.

Good and understandable book, but exam voucher has expired...
The book is good for absolute beginners and for someone who wants to consolidate their knowledge about hardware, software and networks essentials in details and to understand all that even better and of course to take exam and get their certificate. The book has a lot of explanations, examples, and is written in good understandable way.In my opinion a bit bad side of the book is that it is in black and white. If the pictures would be in colour it would be even more better and clearer for the beginners to see what they need to look for and what looks how in real life. The other thing is that the exam discount code has expired, and it clearly says that it is valid until December 31, 2017, and i can see that i'm not the only one with this problem.

Great quality writing, not as dense as people make out.
This is not a book you read cover to cover, it's a reference book that goes alongside your studies/work. If you are trying to read this cover to cover, you will feel it's a lot to get through or that the author waffles. Using this as a reference book alongside my online A+ studies, I have found the defitions and chapters to be very succint and informative, better than my online materials! Excellent study book, very clear print with quality paper, generous margins, and it looks lovely too.The fact this book actually manages to cram everything from total beginner to advanced is in fact an impressive feat more than a downside!

Hilarious and educational
If you're studying for the A+ certification, don't pass by this book.Unlike many factual authors, Meyers actually has a sense of humor and it shows on nearly every page of this publication - that made not just easier but actually fun to get through this brick of a tome. He uses fun and well thought through examples that make complex systems easy to visualise, and the little questionnaires at the end of each chapter are good pointers for what you understood and what you should review.I learned so much about computers and software I never thought I'd be able to from just a book simply thanks to his style of writing that kept me interested and hungry for learning more.

Use "lock down" to learn new skills.
Preparing to update my IT skills, in order to fully enjoy my hobby of upgrading gaming PCs and with a view to re entering the IT industry (albeit at a low level), have decided to invest in Mr Meyers' offering, as I like his easy, yet informative delivery of what can be a complex subject, along with study tips, demystifying the process.Once I have gained 90% proficiency with this edition, I will then buy the latest edition, then using that as a final review will book and sit the Exams.Highly recommended.

Very average
After reading a few more chapters and getting into the book, I had to edit my review as I do not like to give false information. I find this book to be average at most, if anything this book goes into too much detail which instead of providing you with extra knowledge all it does is confuse you even more. I don't think the author is amazing at explaining concepts either, so too much detail plus bad explanation just equals confusion, plain and simple. I can't rely on this book as a main study tool tbh. I am looking elsewhere as i can see myself reading this book getting to the end and asking myself "what did I actually learn from this?" Also black and white pics..really.. How are we meant to clearly recognise plugs if we cant see colours etc? The exams are too expensive to risk using just this book, I advise reading the book if youre a novice then finding something else.. The author has a new book coming iut with coloured pics so maybe go for that one, though I cant help but feel that by creating various inadequate versions the author has turned this into a cash-cow.
