In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction Paperback – 6 Jan. 2009

This is a gripping book. It was recommended to me - and its not a book I would have necessarily thought to buy without the recommendation. But it is a fascinating, heartfelt and expert exploration of the lives of addicts. It has much to teach those of us lucky enough not to be touched by severe addiction. I had never heard of this author before but have since bought two of his other books - he is deservedly well known in Canada and USA. Excellent read.

The best thinker on the subject of addictions alive today - his approach is spot on and tremendously insightful. A MUST read for addicts, their families and well, everyone really - as he points out, we are all addicts and to understand the source, development and most successful methods of helping are crucial to all of us.

Love Gabor! Book is brilliant

Dr Mate will go down in history ( along with Bradshaw) as one of the truth tellers of his generation and for generations to come. Written with love, kindness, searing honesty and backed up with scientific evidence, I wish a copy of this book was given to all Doctors in training and available for all addicts and recovering people (for free) I just can't recommend it highly enough.

This has opened my eyes to the plight of others, who are so easily ignored. The book has taught me so much in so many ways. The explanation of the addicted brain function is what I was after to learn and this has given me a good start.The authors ability to show his vulnerability is inspiring to all of us to know and accept ourselves as we are.

I was so impressed with this book. It is brilliant - very well written, thought provoking, at times harrowing. I have learnt a lot about the complexities of addiction (not just drug abuse and misuse).

Excellent read. Highly recommend it for those who work to support those with addiction. It is packed with information but is an easy enough read. Will be a reference point for me for many years particularly around brain chemistry/biology/physiology. Buy it!

Great book Mate is a great author, and I love all the stories he told although it is triggering, it is an eye-opener for many!

Loved this book and finished it within less than a month coz its eye opening and informative.Trying my best to understand the very sad and complex disease of substance abuse and other related addictions in general.Will be looking forward to purchase his other titles on ADHD and the other earlier releases.
