Q: How good is the viewing angle on the display? Do you have to be directly overhead to read it, or can you see the numbers on the screen at an angle?

The viewing angle is fine, although it's nothing I would note as being outstanding. I use it in a classroom setting, and if it's sitting on the edge of the desk, I can clearly read the numbers from my seat without having to pick it up just to look at it.

Yes - except there is no "w" before the 531. It is the Sharp EL531X-XBWH

Q: Is it good to use for algebra 1?

It will work OK I would think. After using it a while I have noticed the keyboard is not as tactile as a person would like. Other wise it is great for the price.
