Do you only hook up to it when check engine is on or it stays plugged in?

Do not leave it plugged in if your vehicle has the diagnostic port powered on even with the key is off. Check it by looking at the Bluetooth menu on your phone after you shut the car off. If the sensor stays connected for more than a few minutes after turning off the car it is likely continuously powered on. If it disconnects then the port is powered off
