A basic but easy to use fault code tool
Model: MS309I opted for the slightly higher model with this (it's very much entry point price wise but there are cheaper ones than this) the most obvious difference is a three line backlit LCD display. This arrived in a blister pack with no case but it did come with a fairly good instruction book detailing the use of the scanner.Case material is plastic but feels quite dense and a reasonable cover on the LCD display. The location of the socket varies from car to car some have it beneath the handbrake/gear stick casing, some under the bonnet or on the cockpit area. This requires no batteries it's powered via the car battery. Only two buttons makes operation quite simple it is worth a read of the manual as this does provide some extra information on codes and usage. In use this does a fine job if you want to read or erase codes, it's also possible to recover the VIN number of the vehicle and use freeze frame data. What it can't do is run real-time tests or do any of the more advanced functions such as plotting graphs. However unless you're working as a mechanic this is probably good enough for many users. The most important part is retrieving the codes or clearing them. I would suggest for diagnosing problems there is a reason why fault codes appear some cars have an engine fault light and an electrical problem (usually a car with a spanner) the engine fault light is a stop as soon as possible it could be a mechanical issue. Electrical issues could vary from a faulty sensor (camshaft/timing/oxygen) to pressure, fuel issues there are literally hundreds of codes this makes it easier to find the problems. Clearing codes is fine but if they come back you'll have to address the issue it's not a bad idea to do that (try clearing them first) but it won't fix the problems just make you aware of them. Don't ignore persistent faults it can lead to more problems later on.I tested this on a few cars whilst the manual says it works with 1996 vehicles and onwards I believe that's the USA, EU legislation was brought out in 2001 making it mandatory for all vehicles to use the OBD system. Sure enough in testing on a 1999 Astra it didn't read codes, but it had no problems with a 2006 Astra/Corsa model and a 2003 ford or a 2002 Nissan. It's likely to work with 2001 vehicles and newer models. This isn't a high end diagnostic, but it is very useful whilst some newer cars can flash the codes up in sequence and display the codes on the LCD this provides a way to re-set the codes and that might be required even if a part has been replaced. Pretty happy with this purchase it's a must have for car users and effectively pays for itself the first time it's used saving a trip to a garage and charge just to read a code.
